The County is now partnering with MakeSoil!

By Mar 05, 2026

The County’s Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division is now partnering with MakeSoil, a community network where users can track food scraps saved from landfill, calculate GHG emissions saved, and even connect with neighbors and community members to trade and collaborate over composting!

How does it work? After creating an account, you can either be a “Soil Maker” or a “Soil Supporter.” Soil Makers are those who compost, while Soil Supporters are people who contribute food scraps. You can see and connect with other composters in your community, make your composter private or public, and even implement a message board to communicate with folks about your drop-offs! Best of all, MakeSoil has a TON of resources to help community members get the most out of their composting journey.

So, if you already compost at home (whether using our Earth Machines or another method) or are interested in participating, check it out!

MakeSoil can be found online at www.MakeSoil.org. You can also find them in the app store!

P.S. Want to compost at home, but don’t have the space or time? Check out our new vermicomposters, which are suitable for small indoor spaces!*

*Worms for vermicomposting can be purchased at a discount for MakeSoil users from Island Seed & Feed in Goleta and Growing Grounds Farm in Santa Maria. Contact the shops ahead of time to ensure availability.
