Screen Your Green (bin)!

By Sep 01, 2024 - Organics

Green bin contamination in our region has unfortunately been on the rise. Trash bags, plastics of all kinds, toys, garden hoses, plant pots, pet waste, clothing items, sporting equipment, painted wood, and fibrous plants like palm fronds should NEVER go into your green bin! These contaminate our organics processing facilities and their mulch and compost end products.

Please note, organic waste collection can differ depending on where you live.

  • South Coast and Santa Ynez Valley residents should place food scraps in their trash, where they’ll be sorted out and composted at the County’s ReSource Center. If you live or work in these areas, keep food scraps OUT of your green bin. Materials from your green bin are mulched, not composted. See our South Coast and SYV flyer here.
  • North County residents should place food scraps in their green bins to be composted along with their yard waste. See our North County flyer here.
