Businesses with Hazardous Waste
LessIsMore.org works best in modern browsers like Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer 8. All are free to download and will greatly improve your internet experience. Wastes in this section are dangerous to you and the environment. Handle them carefully and dispose of them properly. Legally, households may not transport more than 15 gallons of wet or 125 pounds of dry hazardous materials. Read about the regulation.
If your business generates hazardous waste and is located in the Cities of Goleta, Santa Barbara, Solvang, or unincorporated southern Santa Barbara County, you may be able to dispose of the waste through the County’s CESQG program. The Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) Program is located at the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center, on UCSB’s Campus.
To qualify as a CESQG:
- Businesses must generate less than 27 gallons or 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month, or
- 1 quart or 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste per month (“acutely” means very hazardous).
- If you generate more than this amount monthly, you are a Large Quantity Generator and will need to have a hazardous waste hauler come to your location for a pick-up. See more information here.
- CESQG Businesses are charged a user fee of $29.00 for processing and administration costs, plus a disposal fee based on the types and quantities of waste being disposed. Nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3)) are eligible for a 25% discount, and the user fee is waived.
What types of hazardous waste can I bring as a business for at-cost disposal?
- Antifreeze, all types of batteries, oils, and paints
- Aerosols, acids, bases, cleaners, other automotive fluids
- Fluorescent bulbs, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, photochemicals, solvents, PCB ballasts
ABOP ONE-TIME SMALL QUANTITY VISITS:
- If you have very small quantities of paint (less than 15 gallons) you can take it to many of the sites listed here when you type in your address: Site Locator | Find a PaintCare Drop-off Site. Make sure a site lists that businesses are able to dispose of paint.
- The same goes for small quantities of batteries, there are many stores in the area that accept batteries for disposal. Call ahead at CVS, Rite-AID, Hardware Stores, etc.
- Antifreeze and motor oil are accepted from businesses at many auto parts stores.
What is not accepted?
- Needles and other biohazards. Please see our sharps page for where to bring these.
- Electronic waste. Please see our E-waste page for where to bring this.
- Anything that is explosive in nature.
What will I need to drop off my business hazardous waste at the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center?
- Qualification as a CESQG
- An EPA Identification number
- An appointment on a Friday morning
Applying for an EPA Identification Number:
- In California, every business that generates or accumulates hazardous waste is required to have an EPA identification number. If you need an EPA ID, please head to the DTSC website and apply for the State ID on the righthand side, not the Federal ID. There is no cost to applying for an EPA ID.
-
- If your business is likely to use the Hazardous Waste Center once a month or even just twice a year, apply for the Permanent State ID. It takes the DTSC about two to three weeks to assign your business a Permanent ID, but you will only have to recertify it once every four years, and this is an easy process.
- If this is a one-time cleanup for your business, apply only for the Temporary State ID. You will receive the Temporary ID immediately after finishing the application. However, the Temporary ID only works for 90 days from the day you receive it.
- If your business wants to get their hazardous waste out ASAP but you will need more trips in the future, you can apply for both, and use the Temporary ID until your business receives the Permanent ID.
Setting up a hazardous waste appointment for a Friday morning between 9AM and 11:45AM:
- Once you receive your State EPA ID, it will take a few business days to get registered in our system.
- If you need an appointment immediately, you can call (805) 882-3602 or email pwrrwmhazwaste@countyofsb.org and let us know you received your EPA ID number.
- Once your EPA ID is in our system, you can set up an appointment here with your EPA ID or call (805) 882-3602.
Before your appointment, please read our Brochure for all information on what you should expect. Directions to the Center can be accessed here (listed directions) or here (Google Maps).
Please note that businesses and other non-households are prohibited to use the CHWCC on weekend days.
Making a payment after your hazardous waste appointment
- An invoice will be sent to the email you used to sign up for a hazardous waste appointment. You may pay the invoice by check at the appointment or by mail, or pay online via credit card. The link to pay online is on the invoice you receive. Please remit payment within 30 days.
You’re all set! If you took the monthly limit of hazardous waste, you may schedule an appointment for the next month. We make exceptions to allow for another appointment during the same month if you did not take the entire limit in your visit. Thank you for keeping hazardous waste out of the landfills!
A user fee of $29.00 is charged for every appointment.
