Hazardous Waste Warning
LessIsMore.org works best in modern browsers like Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer 8. All are free to download and will greatly improve your internet experience. Wastes in this section are dangerous to you and the environment. Handle them carefully and dispose of them properly. Legally, households may not transport more than 15 gallons of wet or 125 pounds of dry hazardous materials. Read about the regulation.
Solvents and Adhesives
Solvents have the ability to dissolve other substances. Common household solvents include paint thinner, nail polish remover, and spot remover. Solvents are also used in detergents, perfumes, and dry cleaning solutions.
So why are solvents dangerous?
In addition to being flammable, solvents are also toxic. Exposure to solvents can damage the nervous system, liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system. Exposure can also cause cancer and even lead to death. Make sure to store solvents in a safe container away from children and pets. Dispose of unwanted solvents at one of the household hazardous waste collection centers listed below.
What about adhesives?
Adhesives are glues. If you have a large volume of adhesives, much like solvents, they must be disposed of properly. Of course, if they're still in good condition, consider donating them to someone who can use them. You can also check out our Art and Craft Supplies page for good ways to use up your old adhesive or solvent.
