County Recycles 75% of Community’s Waste

On Tuesday the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, otherwise known as CalRecycle, officially approved the County's 2012 Annual Report that documents the disposition of waste collected in the region.

For our region, the State had set a target per capita disposal rate of 7.4 pounds per person per day, which equals 50% of total waste generated locally.  In its report, County staff found that our community discarded far less, only 3.7 pounds per capita.  Based on these figures, our region diverted (avoided landfilling) 75% of waste generated last year.

The report covers the unincorporated areas of the County, as well as the City of Goleta which is included in the Regional Reporting Authority.  Read more about CalRecycle's diversion goals and how disposal rates are calculated by clicking here.
